Rongai route - 7 days
Rongai Route – 7 Days
The Rongai Route is the only route that approaches Mount Kilimanjaro from the northern side, near the Kenya border. It is well known for its peaceful atmosphere, low traffic, and drier conditions compared to the southern routes, making it a great choice for trekkers seeking a more remote and less crowded climbing experience.
The 7-day Rongai itinerary offers a more gradual ascent than the 6-day option, giving climbers better acclimatization and an improved chance of reaching Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa. The route passes through a variety of landscapes, starting from cultivated farmland and pine forest, then moving into heath, moorland, and alpine desert zones before reaching the summit area.
One of the highlights of the Rongai Route is the sense of true wilderness, especially in the early days when wildlife sightings such as colobus monkeys and antelopes are more common. The descent is usually made via the Marangu Route, offering a different perspective of the mountain’s southern slopes.
Rongai 7 Days is ideal for trekkers who want a quieter, more gradual, and safer acclimatization profile while still enjoying a full Kilimanjaro adventure experience.
