Northern Circuit route

The Northern Circuit Route is considered the most scenic and least crowded route on Mount Kilimanjaro, offering climbers a truly unique and serene experience. It is one of the newer routes, gaining popularity due to its beautiful landscapes, high summit success rate, and the opportunity to hike around the entire mountain.

The Northern Circuit Route begins at the Lemosho Gate on the western side of Kilimanjaro, but instead of heading straight up like other routes, it takes a more gradual, scenic path around the northern slopes. This longer and more gradual ascent allows climbers to experience a wide variety of ecosystems, from lush rainforests to alpine deserts, while giving their bodies more time to acclimatize. The extended duration of the trek (typically 8 or 9 days) significantly increases the chances of summit success, making it ideal for climbers who prioritize safety and acclimatization.

The route passes through some of the most beautiful landscapes on the mountain, including dramatic cliffs, expansive savannahs, and areas with panoramic views of the Kilimanjaro massif. As you ascend, you will experience diverse ecosystems, including lush forest, moorlands, and alpine desert. In addition to the stunning natural beauty, the Northern Circuit offers exceptional wildlife spotting opportunities, including sightings of monkeys, birds, and even the occasional elephant or buffalo.

The Northern Circuit is known for its tranquility and remoteness, especially in the earlier days of the climb. Due to its relatively new status, it receives far fewer climbers than routes like Machame or Marangu, meaning you’ll likely enjoy the peace and quiet of the mountain without the crowds. The route doesn’t join any other route until the final days, ensuring a more peaceful trekking experience.

More details

One of the most significant benefits of the Northern Circuit is the extra time it gives for acclimatization. The gradual ascent and longer duration allow climbers to adjust to the increasing altitude, significantly reducing the chances of altitude sickness. This route also follows the “walk high, sleep low” principle, which helps climbers gain the proper acclimatization needed for a successful summit.

The Northern Circuit merges with the Lemosho Route on Day 5, and the final stretch towards the summit is shared with the other routes, including Machame. This final leg takes climbers through the stunning Shira Plateau before reaching the summit on the renowned summit day.

Due to its longer duration, fewer crowds, and improved acclimatization opportunities, the Northern Circuit Route boasts one of the highest success rates for summiting Kilimanjaro, making it an excellent choice for climbers who are in no rush to summit and want to enjoy a more serene, scenic, and rewarding experience.
