FAQs
Yes. The Machame Route is physically demanding and involves several days of trekking at high altitude. The six-day itinerary requires good fitness and endurance, particularly because some trekking days are long and the summit attempt is challenging.
Machame is often referred to as the “Whiskey Route” as a nickname that developed in contrast to the Marangu Route, which is sometimes called the “Coca-Cola Route.” The name does not relate to alcohol being part of the climb.
Yes. The route follows a climb high, sleep low approach, particularly on the journey from Shira toward Lava Tower and down to Barranco Camp. This provides valuable altitude exposure, although a longer itinerary may offer even more time for acclimatization.
Technical climbing experience is not required. However, a good level of physical fitness, endurance and preparation is important because the trek is physically demanding and takes place at high altitude.
Climbers stay in tents at designated mountain campsites. A dedicated mountain crew carries and sets up the camping equipment and prepares meals throughout the climb.
The most popular climbing seasons are generally January to early March and June to October, when conditions are typically drier. Kilimanjaro can be climbed throughout much of the year, but weather conditions can vary.
Preparation should include cardiovascular exercise, strength training, long-distance walking or hiking and, ideally, practice on hilly or mountainous terrain. Building endurance before the climb can help you enjoy the experience and handle the physical demands of the route.
Your safety is always the priority. Your guides will monitor your health and condition throughout the climb. If altitude sickness or another health concern makes it unsafe to continue, the guide will arrange the safest possible descent with support from the mountain crew.
