After breakfast and a briefing with your mountain guide, you will travel to Marangu Gate, where registration formalities are completed before beginning your Kilimanjaro adventure.
The first day of trekking takes you through the lush rainforest of Kilimanjaro National Park. The trail is scenic and relatively gentle, surrounded by tall trees, tropical vegetation and the sounds of the forest. Keep an eye out for blue monkeys and other wildlife that can sometimes be seen among the trees.
You will arrive at Mandara Hut in the afternoon. After settling in, you can relax and enjoy your first evening on the mountain. If time and energy allow, you may take a short walk to Maundi Crater, which offers beautiful views of the surrounding landscape.
Overnight: Mandara Hut
Meals: Lunch and Dinner
Elevation: 2,700 m to 3,720 m
Distance: Approximately 12 km
Hiking Time: 5–7 hours
Habitat: Rainforest to Moorland
After breakfast, continue your trek as the lush rainforest gradually gives way to open moorland. The scenery changes dramatically, with wider views of the mountain and the surrounding landscapes.
As you gain altitude, the vegetation becomes shorter and the environment more open. On clear days, you can enjoy impressive views toward Mawenzi Peak, one of Kilimanjaro's spectacular volcanic cones.
Arrive at Horombo Hut, where you will spend the next two nights. Take time to rest, hydrate and allow your body to adjust to the higher altitude.
Overnight: Horombo Hut
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
Elevation: Approximately 3,720 m to 4,000 m+ and back
Hiking Time: 3–5 hours
Habitat: Moorland
Today is dedicated to acclimatization, an important part of preparing your body for the higher altitudes ahead. After breakfast, you will take a guided hike to a higher elevation before returning to Horombo Hut.
This follows the important principle of “climb high, sleep low,” helping your body adapt to the changing altitude while giving you additional time to rest and recover.
The day also provides an opportunity to enjoy the spectacular scenery around Horombo, with views of Mawenzi Peak and the open landscapes of the mountain.
After returning to camp, relax, hydrate and prepare for the next stage of your journey toward Kibo Hut.
Overnight: Horombo Hut
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
Elevation: 3,720 m to 4,703 m
Distance: Approximately 10 km
Hiking Time: 5–6 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
After breakfast, continue your ascent toward the high-altitude zone of Mount Kilimanjaro. The route crosses the Saddle, a wide and open landscape located between the dramatic peaks of Mawenzi and Kibo.
As you move higher, vegetation becomes increasingly scarce and the scenery takes on a rugged, otherworldly character. You will arrive at Kibo Hut, located near the base of the summit route.
After an early dinner, prepare your equipment and get some rest before the summit attempt, which begins shortly after midnight.
Overnight: Kibo Hut
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
Elevation: 4,703 m to 5,895 m to 3,720 m
Distance: Approximately 22 km
Hiking Time: 12–15 hours

This is the most challenging and rewarding day of your Kilimanjaro adventure.
Your summit attempt begins around midnight as you climb slowly through the darkness toward Gillman's Point on the crater rim. The trail is steep and demanding, and your guides will support and encourage you throughout the ascent.
From Gillman's Point, continue along the crater rim toward Uhuru Peak (5,895 m), the highest point in Africa. Reaching the summit is an unforgettable achievement and a moment to celebrate your journey to the Roof of Africa.
After taking photographs and enjoying the incredible experience, begin your descent back to Kibo Hut for a short rest before continuing down to Horombo Hut. The descent is long, but reaching the lower altitude brings welcome relief after the demanding summit day.
Overnight: Horombo Hut
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
Elevation: 3,720 m to 1,860 m
Distance: Approximately 20 km
Hiking Time: 5–7 hours

After breakfast, begin your final descent through the changing landscapes of Mount Kilimanjaro. The trail takes you from the open moorland back into the lush rainforest as you make your way toward Marangu Gate.
Upon arrival at the gate, successful climbers will receive their Kilimanjaro summit certificates and celebrate the completion of their incredible adventure.
You will then be transferred back to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha, where you can relax and reflect on your unforgettable journey to the summit of Africa's highest mountain.

FAQs
The main advantage is the additional acclimatization day at Horombo Hut. Spending an extra day at altitude gives your body more time to adjust before continuing toward Kibo Hut and the summit, making the six-day itinerary generally a better choice than the shorter version.
Yes, the Marangu Route can be suitable for beginners with good physical preparation and the support of an experienced mountain team. The additional acclimatization day makes the 6-day itinerary a more comfortable option than the 5-day version, although Kilimanjaro remains a serious high-altitude challenge.
No. The Marangu Route is the only major Kilimanjaro route where climbers stay in designated mountain huts rather than tents. This makes it an attractive option for travelers who prefer hut accommodation.
The route is physically demanding, especially on summit day. However, the trails are generally well-established, and the additional acclimatization day helps make the itinerary more manageable than the 5-day option.
The most popular times are during the drier periods, particularly January to early March and June to October. These months generally offer more favorable trekking conditions, although weather on Mount Kilimanjaro can change at any time.
A good level of fitness and endurance is recommended. Preparing with regular hiking, long walks, cardiovascular training and strength exercises can help you enjoy the trek and improve your chances of reaching the summit.
Your guides will monitor your health throughout the climb. If you develop symptoms of altitude sickness, they will assess your condition and recommend the safest course of action. In some situations, descending to a lower altitude may be necessary.
Essential items include suitable hiking boots, warm layers for summit night, waterproof clothing, gloves, a warm hat, a daypack and other personal trekking gear. A detailed Kilimanjaro packing list will help you prepare for the changing conditions on the mountain.
