KILIMANJARO TREKKING ROUTES

ONE MOUNTAIN. MANY PATHS. YOUR ADVENTURE.

Mount Kilimanjaro offers several routes, each with unique scenery, difficulty, and character. Choosing the right route is key to planning your adventure.

There is no single “best” Kilimanjaro route for everyone. The right choice depends on what you want from your adventure.

Whether you prefer a scenic and gradual trek, a shorter traditional route, a quieter trail, or a longer journey designed around acclimatization, we have a route to match your adventure.

7 Days / 6 Nights

Known for its spectacular scenery and diverse landscapes, the Machame Route is one of Kilimanjaro’s most popular trekking routes. The trail approaches the mountain from the south and offers an immersive trekking experience through several ecological zones.

Best for: Scenic trekking, adventure seekers, and travelers looking for a classic Kilimanjaro experience.

8 Days/ 7 Nights

The Lemosho Route begins on the western side of Mount Kilimanjaro and is renowned for its beautiful landscapes and gradual approach. Its longer itinerary allows more time on the mountain and provides a rewarding trekking experience.

Best for: Scenic views, longer itineraries, and trekkers who prefer a more gradual journey.

6 Days/ 5 Nights

Often called the “Coca-Cola Route,” Marangu is the only Kilimanjaro route where trekkers stay in mountain huts rather than tents. Its established trail and hut accommodation make it a distinctive way to experience the mountain.

Best for: Trekkers who prefer hut accommodation and a straightforward trail.

7 Days/ 6 Nights

Approaching Kilimanjaro from the northern side near the Tanzania–Kenya border, the Rongai Route offers a different perspective of the mountain. It is known for its quieter atmosphere and remote wilderness experience.

Best for: Travelers seeking a quieter approach and a different side of Kilimanjaro.

9 Days/ 8 Nights

The Northern Circuit is the longest established route on Kilimanjaro, offering an extended journey around the northern slopes of the mountain. Its longer itinerary provides a spacious trekking experience with extensive scenery and time on the trail.

Best for: Trekkers seeking a longer itinerary, scenic variety, and a more gradual mountain experience.

6 Days/ 5 Nights

The Umbwe Route is a direct and challenging approach to Kilimanjaro. With steep sections and a more demanding character, it is better suited to experienced and physically prepared trekkers.

Best for: Experienced trekkers looking for a more challenging adventure.

7 Days/ 6 Nights

The Shira Route approaches Kilimanjaro from the western side and begins at a relatively high elevation. It crosses the Shira Plateau before joining the southern routes toward the summit.

Best for: Trekkers looking for western-side scenery and an alternative approach to Kilimanjaro.

Choosing a route should go beyond simply looking at the number of days.

FOR THE BEST SCENERY

Consider Lemosho, Machame, or Northern Circuit for a journey featuring varied landscapes and memorable mountain scenery.

FOR MORE TIME TO ACCLIMATIZE

Longer itineraries such as Lemosho and Northern Circuit provide more days on the mountain, which can support a more gradual trekking schedule.

FOR HUT ACCOMMODATION

Marangu Route is the traditional choice for trekkers who prefer sleeping in mountain huts.

FOR A QUIETER EXPERIENCE

Rongai Route offers a northern approach with a different atmosphere from the more frequently used southern trails.

From the lush rainforest to the open alpine landscapes and the dramatic summit environment, Kilimanjaro changes as you climb.

Your route determines where your journey begins, the landscapes you encounter, the pace of your itinerary, and the way you experience the mountain.
